Solar Energy In Birmingham: For the past few years solar energy in Birmingham has become an excellent example of ‘how to’ bring this important technology out of the field of alternative life-styles and into the mainstream. In 2010, Birmingham Council approved the retrofitting of energy generating Photovoltaic solar panels to 10,000 council houses in the city. This initiative was deigned to both reduce the carbon emissions of the domestic sector within Birmingham while also providing much needed employment in the community.
Birmingham Energy Savers – as the scheme is known – is jointly funded by Birmingham Council, commercial banks and energy suppliers and came after two very successful pilot schemes in the area. In order to recoup the cost, householders will be charged a levy on their energy bills. Even so, the Council maintain that the installation of solar panels – along with a plan for enhanced insulation – will still result in lower electricity and heating bills for the consumers.
After the initial 10,000 houses are equipped with solar energy in Birmingham, the proceeds from the projected profits are projected to amount to over 2 billion pounds. This money will be invested back into the scheme as the Council rolls out its ambitious plan to retrofit 200,000 homes in the Birmingham area with solar panels.
If this initiative is successful, Birmingham will move on to the privately owned property within the city. Eventually it is envisaged that all 420,000 houses within the greater Birmingham area will be insulated and fitted with solar panels. This scheme will not only reduce the carbon footprint of the city, but, if it succeeds within the projected time frame, it will also go a long way towards meeting Birmingham’s commitment to reduce its carbon emissions by 26% by 2026.
This scheme to install solar energy in Birmingham homes may well prove very far-sighted as the Council will not only save money in the long-term but expertise will be built up in the technology and skills required to create green energy. This, in a city heavily reliant on manufacturing, may well prove to be the wisest and most far-sighted part of the entire initiative.
